| ISLANDSMILES
got featured in a special Jamaica Observer spread
on the Jamaica Cancer Society Relay for Life recently.
There was a nice shot of our own Dr Jeffery Meeks
smiling happily with two ladies at his side. It
is no secret that ISLANDSMILES
and all of us here, as well as many of our friends
and family members, are avid supporters of the
Relay for Life event and the Jamaica Cancer Society
can count on us to continue being there for them
in any way we can in the future |

| Congratulations to Lelieth
Hamilton who has completed her Bachelors
Degree in Human Resources at the University
College of the Caribbean. |
| Ryan Johnson |
| You
may have heard of a project called Generating
Genius, initiated by a British educator, Dr
Tony Sewell. The project offers Jamaica and
British schoolboys the chance to prepare to
become the doctors and scientists of the future.
Well,
we are not surprised to hear that 12-year-old
Campion College student Ryan Johnson
has been selected as one of the ten
Jamaican participants on the programme. Since
the tender age of seven, Ryan has been fascinated
by television documentaries of doctors performing
medical procedures. Now he His mother noted
his interest and promptly bought the book “Gifted
Hands” by Dr Ben Carson, which she read to
him, chapter by chapter, every night. The result?
Now Ryan wants to become a neuro-surgeon.
Ryan
and the other schoolboys will spend a four-week
summer camp at UWI, where they will be exposed
to what it would be like to be medical students.
Then, further studies to be taught by UWI staff,
will be offered to the Jamaican participants
on several weekends of the year and
at half-term. We know Ryan will be at the top
of the class! |

| AFEKE KAMBUI |
| We
may one day have the opportunity to see Afeke
Kambui performing with an internationally
renowned symphony orchestra. At least that's where
we think she's heading. Afeke is an eighteen-year-old
sixth form student who has been playing the cello
for six years. She used to play the saxophone but
she fell in love with the “deep resonant tone” of
the cello, which she considers the most expressive
string instrument. Perfecting her craft on the cello
takes up a lot of Afeke's time but she still manages
to study, French, biology, chemistry, physics and
maths. Talk about time-management! We wish Afeke
all
the best when she heads off to McAllister University
in September.

| In
our last issue we somehow omitted Kari
Brown from the list of talented youngsters
who performed in the Jamaica Musical Theatre
Company's production of Sleeping Beauty. Please
accept our apologies, Kari, the chorus would
not have been the same without you.
Karene
Ricketts wowed
the audience at Reggae Sumfest 05. The PACE
Band, of hich she is the female lead—singer
belted out some regae classica that had th
tourists
going crazy. Then as if that was not enough,
Karene gave the patrons a free dance class,
demonstrating all the proper ways to execute
the new moves. She was really on form.
We
read that our own Ce'cile
is back on the music scene. You can look out
for her new music video and she also landed
a role in the upcoming Jamaican film , Glory
to Glorianna . In late July she will be
appearing in Washington DC before heading off
on a month-long European tour in August.
And
congratulations to Stefanie Belnavis
, choreographer par excellence, on
the successful staging of “A Moment of Myself”,
a dance presentation staged at the Phillip
Sherlock
Centre for the Creative Arts in July. We know
we'll be seeing a lot more of Stefanie's dance
creations in the future.
