We Made The News
ISLANDSMILES got featured in a special Jamaica Observer spread on the Jamaica Cancer Society Relay for Life recently. There was a nice shot of our own Dr Jeffery Meeks smiling happily with two ladies at his side. It is no secret that ISLANDSMILES and all of us here, as well as many of our friends and family members, are avid supporters of the Relay for Life event and the Jamaica Cancer Society can count on us to continue being there for them in any way we can in the future

Lelieth Hamilton
Congratulations to Lelieth Hamilton who has completed her Bachelors Degree in Human Resources at the University College of the Caribbean.
Ryan Johnson
You may have heard of a project called Generating Genius, initiated by a British educator, Dr Tony Sewell. The project offers Jamaica and British schoolboys the chance to prepare to become the doctors and scientists of the future.

Well, we are not surprised to hear that 12-year-old Campion College student Ryan Johnson has been selected as one of the ten Jamaican participants on the programme. Since the tender age of seven, Ryan has been fascinated by television documentaries of doctors performing medical procedures. Now he His mother noted his interest and promptly bought the book “Gifted Hands” by Dr Ben Carson, which she read to him, chapter by chapter, every night. The result? Now Ryan wants to become a neuro-surgeon.

Ryan and the other schoolboys will spend a four-week summer camp at UWI, where they will be exposed to what it would be like to be medical students. Then, further studies to be taught by UWI staff, will be offered to the Jamaican participants on several weekends of the year and at half-term. We know Ryan will be at the top of the class!

Krystyna Dickenson
is the recipient of no less than two full scholarships to two prestigious boarding schools in the United States : Western Reserve Academy in Hudson , Ohio and Cate School in Carpinteria , California. She has decided to accept her offer to Cate School in September 2005. Krystyna also received the Lord Haddock McKay Trophy for the most outstanding achievement at the prize-giving ceremony of her school, Heinz Simonitsch School in Montego Bay .

 Lance Rochester
Youthlink Magazine carried a nice feature on Lance Rochester recently. Lance is the captain of the Jamaican water polo team. The team competed in their first major competition at the 2004 Junior Pan-American Games and Lance has high hopes for Jamaica qualifying for the Olympic Games one day. He's doing all he can to make water polo one of the top sports in Jamaica .
Vanacia Johnsom
And in case you thought water polo was only for males, Vanacia Johnson will prove you wrong. She is a member of the National Female Water Polo Squad who represented Jamaica in the Central American and Caribbean Championship in Santo Domingo from August 1 – 9.
Kristine Bell and Leisa Robotham
Meanwhile, on the squash court, we had Kristine Bell and Leisa Robotham representing Jamaica on the Junior Squash Team in the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) tournament in Trinidad in July. This was Kristine's fifth time playing for Jamaica in this tournament. Lauren McClure is another top-class squash player but did not join the team this year since she missed the training lead-up to this tournament because of CXC exams.
Bridgitte Foster-Hylton
We all know Brigitte Foster-Hylton's name but did you know she was ranked at number 10 in the International Association of Athletics Federations July rankings in the women's 100 meters hurdles event?

Patients in News
Milton Brady
Whenever we have a paint job to do, we know who to call. Caught a glimpse of FirstCaribbean International Bank's Managing Director Milton Brady in the Gleaner, painting a wall at the YMCA Headquarters as part of the Bank's Labour Day activities. He was ably assisted by his children Martina and Kaj.
Thalia Soares
Thalia Soares heading for a career in modeling? We think she'd do quite well, considering how nice she looked in the TeenAge/Cooyah special fashion shoot showing off some cute summer tops.
Randi Blake
was the Cover Girl on the Gleaner's Youth Link Magazine a few weeks ago. Randi is a participant in the Miss Teen Jamaica Competition and she has great plans for herself. She is a sixth form student at Campion College and has ambitions of becoming a doctor, perhaps in the field of psychiatry or pediatrics.

But Randi has also been a ballet-dancer for more than 12 years now and loves dancing – as well as reading and baking and… well Randi seem to be a girl that enjoys just about everything. She says that the competition has brought her new friends and “a different outlook on life”. Her motto is that if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything. She advises young people not to ever compromise themselves. Wise words, Randi.

AFEKE KAMBUI
We may one day have the opportunity to see Afeke Kambui performing with an internationally renowned symphony orchestra. At least that's where we think she's heading. Afeke is an eighteen-year-old sixth form student who has been playing the cello for six years. She used to play the saxophone but she fell in love with the “deep resonant tone” of the cello, which she considers the most expressive string instrument. Perfecting her craft on the cello takes up a lot of Afeke's time but she still manages to study, French, biology, chemistry, physics and maths. Talk about time-management! We wish Afeke all the best when she heads off to McAllister University in September.

In our last issue we somehow omitted Kari Brown from the list of talented youngsters who performed in the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company's production of Sleeping Beauty. Please accept our apologies, Kari, the chorus would not have been the same without you.

Karene Ricketts wowed the audience at Reggae Sumfest 05. The PACE Band, of hich she is the female lead—singer belted out some regae classica that had th tourists going crazy. Then as if that was not enough, Karene gave the patrons a free dance class, demonstrating all the proper ways to execute the new moves. She was really on form.

We read that our own Ce'cile is back on the music scene. You can look out for her new music video and she also landed a role in the upcoming Jamaican film , Glory to Glorianna . In late July she will be appearing in Washington DC before heading off on a month-long European tour in August.

And congratulations to Stefanie Belnavis , choreographer par excellence, on the successful staging of “A Moment of Myself”, a dance presentation staged at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts in July. We know we'll be seeing a lot more of Stefanie's dance creations in the future.

We have an impressive list of GSAT scholars who will soon be heading off to their new high schools.

Special congratulations to Damien Chang who won a Government Scholarship
